In the 70’s San Angelo was known as the “Wool Capital of the World”. Still, today ranching of sheep, goats, and cattle remains to be an important industry.
Connecting Downtown San Angelo with Fort Concho
In the 1990s the "Rural/Urban Design Assistance Team" completed a study of the attributes of San Angelo and the ways for us to capitalize on them. There were goals set for the downtown area to connect Fort Concho to Concho Street, the first street in San Angelo. Many of those goals have been accomplished with private and public funds.
Pops Concert
The July 3rd pops concert is said to be the 2nd largest attended outdoor celebration for July 4th in the State of Texas.

San Angelo was home to the original Cinch Shootout in 2012 and the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo is fast becoming recognized as one of the best Rodeos in the USA.

Forbes ranked San Angelo as one of the "Best Cities for Jobs" in 2012. This is divported by the large wool and mohair industry and saw a spike with the oil industry growth in the surrounding areas.
Angelo State University - Growth
Angelo State University has been recognized as one of the fastest-gowning Colleges in Texas with a growth rate of 51% from 2012 to the fall of 2018 and few know of the Planetarium that is housed on campus.
Bordellos and Secret Tunnels
In the late 1800s, Historic Block One of downtown San Angelo was home to several bars and bordellos and was rumored to be a tough district complete with tunnels used for smuggling prostitutes into and out of the infamous bordellos

Goodfellow Air Force Base birth
The history of the Goodfellow Air force Base traces back to pre-Pearl Harbor when President Franklin D. Roosevelt began a program of preparedness that called for facilities to be built that were dedicated to basic and advanced air training. The civic leaders of San Angelo immediately recommend our community and with generous offers of utility hookups, a railroad spur, and a 50- year lease on 640 acres at one dollar per year, and the base was born.
